Our statewide essay contest for sixth-graders - "If I were Mayor, I would..." - lets you tell others what you would do as the leader of your community to make your city or town the best place to live.
Two winning essays will be selected for each of the four Mayors Roundtable Regions (Northern, Northern Central, South Central, and Southern regions). In addition, one essay will be selected from among all entries as the Grand Prize Winner. Each regional winner will receive a $250 savings bond; the Grand Prize Winner will receive a $1,000 savings bond.
The nine winning students along with the parents/guardian and a teacher will be recognized at their respective mayors roundtable meeting held in July. Dates and locations will be determined at a later time.
The school of the Grand Prize Winner will receive $100 to be applied as the school's principal designates.
The essay contest is open to all Indiana students currently enrolled in the sixth grade or being home educated at the sixth-grade level for the 2009-2010 school year.

Imagine:
You are thinking about running for mayor. You are wondering what it would take to run your community and provide the public services your citizens expect.
You begin to think: What kinds of decisions would I make? How would I plan for my city or town's future? If I were mayor, what would I do?
